Aoi Matsuri
Aoi Matsuri (葵祭) is one of Kyoto’s most celebrated festivals, alongside the Gion Matsuri and Jidai Matsuri. The main highlight is a grand parade, where over 500 participants dressed in Heian Period aristocratic attire walk from the Imperial Palace to the Kamo Shrines. Named after the hollyhock leaves worn by participants, the festival has roots dating back to the 7th century and is traditionally associated with rituals to appease the deities of the Kamo Shrines.
During the event, the procession includes men on horseback, decorated ox-drawn carts, giant flower bouquets, and the Saio, a young woman who serves as the high priestess. The parade starts at 10:30 AM and passes through significant sites, including Shimogamo Shrine and Kamigamo Shrine, finishing at 3:30 PM. For the best viewing experience, it’s recommended to book reserved seating at the Imperial Palace or the Kamo Shrines, though crowds are smaller along the rest of the route.
