Nebuta Matsuri

of in events in Aomori

The Nebuta Matsuri (ねぶた祭) in Aomori City is one of Japan's most iconic summer festivals, held annually from August 2 to 7. This vibrant event features giant illuminated floats up to nine meters wide and five meters tall, depicting gods, mythical figures, and kabuki actors. Accompanied by taiko drums, musicians, and hundreds of haneto dancers chanting "Rassera," the floats are paraded through the streets, creating an unforgettable spectacle. Visitors can join the parade by wearing a haneto costume, which can be rented or purchased locally.

The festival peaks from August 4 to 6 with all floats participating. On August 7, an afternoon parade is followed by floats being showcased in Aomori Bay and a spectacular two-hour fireworks display. During the day, visitors can view the floats up close at Rassera Land near ASPM and enjoy performances, food stalls, and souvenirs. The Nebuta Matsuri is a celebration of art, culture, and community, attracting visitors from all over Japan and beyond.
