Wakakusa Yamayaki Festival
The Wakakusa Yamayaki Festival is an exciting annual event where the hillside of Mount Wakakusayama in Nara is set on fire. Located at the eastern end of Nara Park, the fire is visible from throughout the city. The festival starts with a procession at 5:00 PM, followed by fireworks at 6:15 PM. The fire is then set to the mountain's grass, burning it over 30 to 60 minutes. The event has been celebrated for centuries and is believed to have origins in boundary disputes or as a way to drive away wild boars.
The festival is rich in traditions, with involvement from Todaiji Temple, Kofukuji Temple, and Kasuga Shrine. In addition to the burning, a fun sembei throwing contest takes place earlier in the day. Though the festival is held on the fourth Saturday of January each year, it may be canceled or postponed in case of bad weather. Spectators can enjoy the view from various spots around Nara Park, including the former Heijo Palace site.
