Kinosaki Onsen Festival

1 of 1 in events in Kinosaki

Kinosaki’s Onsen Festival, held annually on April 23 and 24, celebrates the founding of Kinosaki Onsen by the Buddhist monk Dochi Shonin over 1,300 years ago. This special event commemorates Dochi Shonin’s dedication to the town’s health, marking the date of his death in 717 AD. According to legend, after praying for 1,000 days, a hot spring sprang from the ground, creating Kinosaki Onsen.

The Onsenji Buddhist monks participate in the festival by walking around Kinosaki, visiting the seven hot springs to pray for the town’s prosperity and safety. It’s a unique and vibrant celebration, deeply rooted in history, making it a must-see event in Kinosaki.
