Ueno Tenjin Festival

1 of 1 in events in Iga Ueno

The Ueno Tenjin Festival (上野天神祭), held annually from October 20 to 22, celebrates the autumn season at Sugawara Shrine. The main event on October 21 features nine danjiri (festival floats) parading through the streets, accompanied by a lively procession of over a hundred ogres. These magnificent danjiri floats are adorned with exquisite decorations, and pulled by crowds while musicians play drums and flutes from within. A key highlight is the appearance of the "hyorotsuki oni," or staggering ogre, which often brings cheers from the crowd and startled cries from children.

The festival also includes the evening event, Yoimiya, on October 24, where the floats are lit up with vibrant paper lanterns. This beautiful sight sets the stage for the full festival, which has earned the status of a National Important Intangible Folk-Cultural Property. Experience this one-of-a-kind celebration that blends music, folklore, and stunning floats in a unique atmosphere.
