  • Kyoto
    Kyoto
Kyoto was for a 1000 years the capital of Japan
  • Morning: Kiyomizu-dera Temple
Start your day early by visiting one of Kyoto's most famous temples, Kiyomizu-dera. This Buddhist temple, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers stunning views of the city from its wooden balcony. Explore the temple's main hall, pagoda, and three-storied pagoda before heading to the adjacent Otowa Waterfall to drink from one of its three streams, believed to grant health, longevity, and success.
  • Midday: Fushimi Inari Shrine
Next, take a short train ride to Fushimi Inari Shrine, known for its thousands of vermilion torii gates. Walk through the gates, each donated by a business or individual, and make your way up to the main shrine. Along the way, you'll find smaller shrines, fox statues, and beautiful views of Kyoto. Don't forget to try some of the local street food, such as takoyaki or okonomiyaki, while exploring the area.
  • Afternoon: Nishiki Market and Gion District
Head back to the city center for a visit to Nishiki Market, also known as Kyoto's Kitchen. This narrow shopping street is lined with over a hundred shops and restaurants selling fresh produce, seafood, and local specialties. After exploring the market, make your way to the nearby Gion District, known for its traditional wooden buildings, geisha culture, and tea houses. Take a stroll down Hanami-koji Street and try to spot a geisha or maiko (apprentice geisha) going to or from their appointments.
  • Evening: Kinkaku-ji Temple
As the sun begins to set, make your way to Kinkaku-ji Temple, also known as the Golden Pavilion. This Zen Buddhist temple is covered in gold leaf and sits on a tranquil pond, creating a picturesque scene. Take a walk around the temple grounds and admire the different views of the pavilion from various angles. End your day by enjoying a cup of matcha tea and a traditional Japanese sweet at one of the teahouses nearby.
