Nihon Minkaen Open Air Museum
Nihon Minkaen (日本民家園), an open-air museum in Kawasaki City, showcases 25 historic buildings from the Edo Period (1603-1868), relocated from various parts of Japan. The museum features traditional farmhouses, such as a gasshozukuri farmhouse from Shirakawago, merchant houses, samurai residences, post-town homes, fishing village houses, a shrine, and even a kabuki stage. These buildings provide a glimpse into Japan's rich architectural and cultural heritage.
Visitors can experience hands-on cultural activities, including indigo dyeing workshops, where you can dye your own handkerchief or traditional shop curtain for a small fee. On Sundays, there are demonstrations of traditional crafts like straw weaving, cloth weaving, and bamboo craft. The museum also hosts seasonal cultural events such as rice cake pounding, folk storytelling, and lion dances. A small folk museum displays tools and instruments from the feudal era, and you can enjoy a meal at a soba restaurant located in one of the farmhouses.
