Oze National Park (尾瀬) is a top hiking destination, located 150 kilometers north of Tokyo in the mountains. Famous for the Ozegahara Marshland and Ozenuma Pond, it offers an unforgettable hiking experience. The park is particularly popular in late spring when skunk cabbages bloom and in early autumn during the fall foliage. The park's trails, which are well-maintained with elevated boardwalks, pass through stunning landscapes and around the marshland and pond. Hikers can enjoy a 6-8 hour trek from the Hatomachitoge to the Oshimizu trailheads.
Oze is perfect for a day trip from Tokyo, though you can stay overnight in mountain huts within the park or in nearby Tokura. The Ozegahara Marshland, about 1400 meters above sea level, is the park's most visited area. In late May and June, the marshland is adorned with blooming skunk cabbages, while the summer months bring yellow alpine lilies. Autumn paints the landscape with bright yellow and red grasses. The park is spread across four prefectures: Gunma, Fukushima, Niigata, and Tochigi, offering various scenic trails.

Getting there

Oze National Park can be accessed from two main directions: the south through Gunma Prefecture and the north through Fukushima Prefecture. The southern route from Gunma is more convenient for visitors from Tokyo.

From Gunma, there are three main trailheads. The Hatomachitoge trailhead is the most popular, located an hour's walk from the marshland. Shuttle buses operate from Tokura to Hatomachitoge from mid-April to early November. The Oshimizu trailhead is the second most popular, with a two-hour walk to Ozenuma Pond. The Fujimi-shita trailhead is the least used. From Tokyo, you can take various trains to Numata Station, then catch buses to Tokura and the trailheads. Rental cars are available at nearby stations. From late May to October, direct buses run from Tokyo to Oze. From Fukushima, buses connect to the Numayamatoge and Miike trailheads.
