Kanmangafuchi Abyss

13 of 24 in Nikko

Kanmangafuchi Abyss (憾満ヶ淵) is a scenic gorge formed by a volcanic eruption from Mount Nantai, located near central Nikko. Only a few hundred meters long, it features a charming riverside walking trail offering breathtaking views.

The gorge is famous for its row of 70 stone Jizo statues, known as “Bake Jizo” (Ghost Jizo), “Narabi Jizo” (Jizo in a line), and “Hyaku Jizo” (100 Jizo). These statues are placed along the river, gazing toward the Nikko Botanical Garden, although the garden cannot be accessed from the abyss.

Getting there

To reach Kanmangafuchi Abyss, take a Tobu bus from JR or Tobu Nikko Station to the Tamozawa bus stop (10 minutes, 350 yen). From the stop, walk for 10-15 minutes through a residential area to reach the trail. Alternatively, you can walk from Toshogu Shrine in about 30 minutes.
