Chuzenji Temple
Chuzenji Temple (中禅寺, Chūzenji), standing on the eastern shore of Lake Chuzenjiko, is a spiritual gem in Nikko. Named after the temple, the lake complements the serene atmosphere of this historic site. The temple's centerpiece is a remarkable six-meter-tall statue of Kannon, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, uniquely carved from a tree still rooted in the ground. This sacred site offers breathtaking views of the lake, making it a must-visit for those seeking history and natural beauty.
Inside, the temple's second floor houses a rare gathering of the Five Buddhist Deva Kings (Myo-o), while its ceiling features a majestic white dragon painted by the same artist behind Toshogu Shrine’s "Crying Dragon." The inner chamber dazzles with intricate floral paintings of Nikko’s diverse flora. With its blend of spiritual significance and artistic beauty, Chuzenji Temple is a place of deep cultural and historical importance.
