Amami Oshima is a big island that takes about two hours to drive from north to south. The main town is Amami City (also called Naze), where ferries from Kagoshima and Okinawa arrive. The airport is in the northeast and about 45 minutes by car from Amami City. Another town, Setouchi (Koniya), is in the south. A main road connects the airport, Amami City, and Setouchi, but a slower road also runs along the west coast. The island is quite hilly with many tunnels.
The best way to explore Amami Oshima is by rental car, since buses don’t run often, especially in remote areas. You can rent a car at the airport or in Amami City. Buses are run by Shimabus and connect most areas, but the service is limited. There are day passes for 1, 2, or 3 days that make travel easier, and they’re available at the airport, city bus center, and port.

Amami Oshima Travel Tips
Amami Oshima (奄美大島) is the largest island in the Satsunan island chain, nestled between Kyushu and Okinawa in Kagoshima Prefecture. Known for its lush climate, stunning beaches, and unique flora, including mangrove forests and vibrant ferns, Amami Oshima offers a tropical paradise reminiscent of its southern neighbors. The island boasts pristine white sand beaches with crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and even snorkeling, all without the crowds found in Okinawa.
