Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine
Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine (白谷雲水峡, Shiratani Unsuikyō) on Yakushima Island is a lush nature park known for its stunning ancient cedar trees, including the famous Nidaiosugi and Kugurisugi. Easily accessible in just 15 minutes, these cedar giants are part of the park’s beauty, making it an ideal location for visitors seeking to experience Yakushima’s forests without the strain of long hikes. The park offers a variety of well-maintained trails ranging from easy walks to more challenging routes that vary in length from one to five hours. For a more relaxing visit, follow the historic footpath built during the Edo period, or opt for trails paved with stone and wood. English signs are available throughout, ensuring accessibility for international visitors.
Shiratani Unsuikyo also holds cultural significance as it inspired the forest scenes in the Studio Ghibli film Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke). The secluded grove, located near Tsuji-toge Pass, was a key influence for the film's iconic wooded landscapes. If you're up for a longer adventure, you can continue along the trail towards Jomonsugi, with a round trip taking about twelve hours. However, this path is more challenging than the easier Arakawa Trailhead route.
