From Kumamoto to Aso

From Kumamoto, you can take a local train to Aso in about 1 hour 40 minutes for 1300 yen, or a faster limited express train in 70 minutes for around 2000–2300 yen. All are covered by the Japan Rail Pass and Kyushu Rail Pass.

From Kumamoto, you can take a "Yamabiko" or "Kyushu Odan" bus to Aso Station. The ride takes about 2 hours, costs 1530 yen, and is covered by the Sun Q Pass. Yamabiko buses run every 2–3 hours, and Kyushu Odan buses run three times a day.
