Takachiho Gorge
Takachiho Gorge (高千穂峡, Takachiho-kyō) is a breathtaking natural wonder in Japan, formed by the Gokase River cutting through volcanic rock. The gorge is lined with towering basalt columns, resembling dragon scales, and features the impressive Minainotaki waterfall, which plunges 17 meters into the river. Visitors can explore the gorge from two unique perspectives. Rowing a boat along the calm river provides an up-close view of the cliffs and waterfall, making it a highly recommended experience. For a different perspective, walk the paved path along the gorge's edge, where you can enjoy stunning views of the river below.
At the southern end of the gorge, you'll find additional attractions such as a freshwater aquarium, a fishing pond, restaurants, and souvenir shops. During the summer, the gorge is beautifully illuminated until 22:00, offering a magical atmosphere. The combination of natural beauty and the chance for outdoor activities makes Takachiho Gorge a must-visit destination.
