Dozaki Church

Recommended
2 of 12 in Fukue Island

Dozaki Church (堂崎教会) stands as a symbol of resilience and faith on the Goto Islands. Built after the lifting of the ban on Christianity in 1873 by two French priests, it became the first Western-style church in the region. The current building, completed in 1908, honors the 26 Martyrs who were executed in Nagasaki.

Unlike many other churches on the islands that still function as places of worship, Dozaki Church also houses a museum. Inside, visitors can explore exhibits that tell the powerful story of local Christian history, making it a fascinating destination for both history lovers and culture seekers.
