Dutch Trading Post
The Dutch Trading Post (平戸オランダ商館, Hirado Oranda Shōkan) was established in 1609 as the Dutch East India Company's base in Japan. The current building is a reconstruction of a warehouse originally built in 1639, which served as part of the post until the Dutch moved to Dejima Island in 1641. The warehouse, reconstructed in 2011, closely resembles the original structure, featuring interlocking stone blocks, large wooden beams, and a Japanese-style tile roof.
Inside the warehouse is a fascinating museum detailing the history of Japanese-Dutch relations and the Dutch trading presence in Japan. Exhibits include paintings, models, armor, and lacquerware, which showcase the goods exchanged during this time. Outside the warehouse, visitors can see remnants of the original trading post, including ruined foundations, parts of the wharf, and a section of the surrounding wall. Nearby is the Dutch Bridge, constructed using Dutch stone-laying techniques.
