Matsura Museum
Matsura Historical Museum (松浦史料博物館, Matsura Shiryō Hakubutsukan) is nestled on a scenic hillside overlooking Hirado Port. This museum is located in the former residence of the Matsura Clan, who ruled Hirado from the 11th to the 19th century. The residence has stood on this land since the Kamakura Period (1192 - 1333) and once served as both the family home and the administrative office for the region. After several reconstructions, the current building dates back to 1893 and was donated to the prefecture in 1955, along with a vast collection of family heirlooms.
Inside, visitors can explore grand samurai armor, intricate lacquer boxes, and heirlooms that tell the story of the clan’s role in international trade. The residence also displays historical maps, documents, and ship diagrams that illustrate the Matsura Clan's dealings with foreign traders. You can also enjoy the peaceful gardens and relax with a traditional matcha tea set at the Kanuntei tea house, or visit the museum's café and gift shop for a unique souvenir.
