Mount Unzen

Mount Unzen (雲仙岳, Unzendake), a dramatic active volcano on the Shimabara Peninsula, offers stunning landscapes shaped by centuries of eruptions. Though its most recent activity in the 1990s caused destruction and loss, today it draws visitors with lush spring azaleas, summer greenery, and rare autumn colors peaking from late October to mid-November. Recognized for its beauty in 1934, Unzen became part of Unzen-Amakusa National Park, one of Japan’s first national parks.

Start your visit at Nita-toge Pass, where the Unzen Ropeway lifts you to scenic viewpoints with sights of the Ariake Sea and beyond. From the upper station, hike to Fugendake (1359m) and gaze toward Heisei Shinzan (1486m), a steaming peak born from the 1990s eruption. Downhill lies Unzen Onsen, a peaceful hot spring town with relaxing baths and lodgings. Nearby, the Heisei Shinzan Nature Center offers insights into the mountain’s power and preservation, along with trails and lookout points.
