The Beppu Ropeway’s lower station is on the road between Beppu and Yufuin. You can reach it by bus number 36 from Beppu Station in about 20 minutes (440 yen one way, 1-2 buses per hour).

Mount Tsurumi
Mount Tsurumi (鶴見岳, Tsurumidake), standing 1,375 meters high, is a stunning mountain that offers sweeping views of Beppu and beyond. Accessible via the Beppu Ropeway, visitors ascend nearly 800 meters to a park near the summit. The park features multiple observation decks that offer panoramic vistas of Beppu, Oita City, Mount Yufu, and the distant Kuju Mountains. On clear days, the views extend far and wide. A 15-minute walk from the upper station will take you to the mountain's summit, while more challenging trails link Tsurumi with nearby peaks. For those looking for a bit more adventure, visitors can hike the entire mountain from the lower station, a two-hour journey.
Mount Tsurumi's charm changes with the seasons. In spring, more than 2,000 cherry trees around the ropeway's lower station bloom, creating a popular hanami spot. In summer, the mountain is covered with colorful rhododendrons. Fall brings beautiful foliage, while winter’s hoarfrost transforms the summit into a winter wonderland. No matter the season, Mount Tsurumi’s natural beauty is unforgettable.
