Oita Prefectural Art Museum (OPAM)
Oita Prefectural Art Museum (大分県立美術館, also known as OPAM) is a must-visit cultural landmark in downtown Oita City, just 30 minutes from central Beppu. Opened in 2015, the museum was designed by renowned architect Ban Shigeru, featuring a striking wooden facade inspired by woven bamboo and large glass walls that seamlessly connect indoor and outdoor spaces. Visitors enter through a bright atrium with a museum shop and large art installations, setting a welcoming tone.
The museum’s main galleries are located on the third floor, accessed through a beautiful entryway with a curved wooden ceiling. OPAM showcases a wide range of art, from traditional paintings and sculptures to poetry and performance art. The permanent exhibition highlights works by Oita artists, including Edo-period painter Tanomura Chikuden and modern masters Fukuda Heihachiro and Takayama Tasuo, offering a rich glimpse into the region’s artistic legacy.
