Usuki Travel Tips

4 of 5 in Oita Prefecture

Usuki (臼杵) is a captivating former castle town nestled on the east coast of Oita Prefecture in Kyushu. Renowned for its unique stone Buddhas carved into the cliffs, Usuki is home to national treasures that stand as a testament to the region's rich cultural heritage. Unlike typical Buddha statues made of wood or metal, these stone masterpieces are a rare sight, drawing visitors from far and wide.

Just five kilometers from the iconic stone Buddhas, Usuki’s city center exudes a delightful old-world charm, reminiscent of its samurai past. Stroll along the cobblestone streets of the former Usuki samurai district, where traditional buildings grace the landscape, many of which welcome curious travelers. Discover the blend of history and artistry in this enchanting town, making Usuki a must-visit destination in Japan.

Getting around

In Usuki, the two main places to visit are the old samurai district in the city center and the famous Usuki Stone Buddhas located about five kilometers southwest of town. You can walk around the samurai district easily from either Usuki Station or Kami-Usuki Station.

To reach the stone Buddhas, buses from Usuki Station are limited (only every 1–3 hours), so taking a taxi (around 2,000 yen one way) or renting a car is more convenient. You’ll find a Toyota rental car office near Kami-Usuki Station, but there are more rental options in Beppu, Oita, and at Oita Airport. If you prefer cycling, you can borrow a bicycle for free at Usuki Station between 9:00 and 17:00.
