Kirishima (霧島) is a breathtaking volcanic mountain range straddling the border of Miyazaki and Kagoshima Prefectures, offering a stunning landscape of mountains, highlands, volcanic lakes, and natural hot springs. While some hiking trails are currently closed due to the recent eruption of Mount Shinmoedake, this area remains a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Experience the rich mythology surrounding Kirishima, where it is believed that Ninigi no Mikoto, the grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu, descended to establish the lineage of Japanese Emperors.

Among the highlights is Mount Takachiho-no-mine, where visitors can see the legendary spear embedded in the mountaintop. For relaxation, explore Ebino Kogen, a quaint village on the Miyazaki side known for its cozy accommodations amidst a stunning highland backdrop, or head to Kirishima Onsen on the Kagoshima side. This lively hot spring town features excellent baths and sweeping views of the region, making it an ideal spot to unwind after a day of hiking.
