Tojinbaka

10 of 11 in Ishigaki Island

Tojinbaka (唐人墓) is a beautifully decorated memorial located on Ishigaki Island, honoring 300 Chinese laborers who tragically lost their lives in the mid-1800s. These men were being transported to the Americas by Western traders for forced labor in mines, but a mutiny broke out due to their harsh treatment. Part of this dramatic and tragic event took place right on Ishigaki.

Today, Tojinbaka stands as a symbol of remembrance and peace. Its unique design, influenced by Chinese architecture, makes it a meaningful cultural site and a striking contrast to the island's natural beauty. Visitors come to reflect on its history and appreciate the cultural connection between Ishigaki and its neighboring regions.
