Festivals

Festivals (祭り, matsuri) are an integral part of Japanese culture, with almost every shrine hosting its own. These festivals, held annually, celebrate the shrine's deity, historical events, or the changing seasons. Some festivals last several days and are full of lively traditions.

A highlight of many festivals is the procession, where the shrine's kami (Shinto deity) is carried through the town in a mikoshi (palanquin). In addition, decorated floats (dashi, yatai, danjiri) are paraded, accompanied by drum and flute music, making each festival unique and full of energy.

Attending festivals in Japan was an unforgettable experience! The energy in the air is contagious, and each festival has its unique charm. I loved watching the mikoshi processions, where the local kami (deity) is carried through the streets in beautiful, intricate palanquins. The vibrant floats, with their colorful decorations and lively drum and flute music, added to the excitement. Whether it's the calm, spiritual vibe of some festivals or the high-energy celebrations of others, every festival in Japan offers something special. Highly recommend experiencing one if you can!
