Tokyo Prefecture

Tokyo (東京, Tōkyō), Japan's capital and the world's most populous metropolis, is one of the country's 47 prefectures. It consists of 23 central wards and numerous cities, towns, and villages, including the Izu and Ogasawara Islands. Before 1868, Tokyo was known as Edo, a small castle town that became Japan's political center in 1603 under Tokugawa Ieyasu. When the emperor moved from Kyoto to Edo in 1868, it was renamed Tokyo.

Today, Tokyo is a vibrant city offering endless shopping, entertainment, cultural experiences, and dining options. Visitors can explore its rich history in areas like Asakusa, along with temples, museums, and gardens. Despite its bustling nature, Tokyo also features attractive green spaces both in the city center and nearby.
