Okinawa Region

Highly Recommended
Region in Japan

Okinawa (沖縄県, Okinawa-ken), Japan's southernmost prefecture, is a tropical paradise of small islands stretching from Kyushu to Taiwan. With warm temperatures year-round and stunning coral reefs, it's a top destination for snorkeling, scuba diving, and enjoying nature. The prefecture is divided into three island groups: the Okinawa Islands, Miyako Islands, and Yaeyama Islands, each offering its own unique charm.

Historically known as the Ryukyu Kingdom, Okinawa has a distinct culture, language, and cuisine, different from mainland Japan. Despite efforts to assimilate, Ryukyuan culture thrives and remains a major attraction. The islands also hold significant history, as the site of a fierce World War II battle. Today, while Okinawa still hosts U.S. military bases, it is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and beautiful landscapes.
