Uwajima Travel Tips

4 of 4 in Ehime Prefecture

Uwajima (宇和島), a charming coastal city in southern Ehime Prefecture, opens up to the Bungo Channel, offering stunning views and deep historical roots. A highlight of Uwajima is its original feudal-era castle, one of only twelve surviving in Japan. For a glimpse into the city’s past, visit the Date Museum, which shares the rich heritage of the Date clan that once ruled the region.

As a top pearl producer in Japan, Uwajima thrives on its maritime industries, including fishing and pearl cultivation. Culinary delights such as Taimeshi (sea bream on rice) and Jakoten (fish cake) reflect Uwajima's coastal character. With scenic waterfront views and a unique bullfighting tradition, this city offers a delightful mix of history, culture, and natural beauty.

Getting around

In Uwajima, most attractions are close to Uwajima Station and easy to reach on foot. It takes about 10–15 minutes to walk to Uwajima Castle and 20–30 minutes to the Date Museum. Taxis in the city center are also affordable, usually under 1,000 yen.

You can also use the local Uwajima Bus, which runs about once an hour. It stops at Uwajima Station, the Bus Center (near the castle), and Tenshaen Garden/Date Museum. A ride costs 160 yen, but bus info is mostly in Japanese, so it may be tricky for some tourists.
