Date Museum

4 of 4 in Uwajima

The Date Museum (伊達博物館, Date Hakubutsukan) is a fascinating tribute to the Date Clan, who governed Uwajima for over 250 years during the Edo Period. The museum tells the story of Uwajima's prosperity under the rule of the Date family, beginning with the first lord, Date Hidemune, from the main branch of the Date Clan in Sendai.

Visitors can explore an extensive collection of artifacts that once belonged to the Date family, including weapons, scroll paintings, family crests, and everyday items. The museum also features a remarkable collection of folding screens (byobu) and maps of historic Uwajima, offering insight into how the city, especially the waterfront, transformed due to land reclamation projects.
