Ogijima Island Travel Tips
Ogijima Island (男木島), located in the Seto Inland Sea, is a peaceful destination just a 40-minute ferry ride from Takamatsu. This small island, home to around 150 people, stretches only two kilometers long and one kilometer wide. The island is characterized by its mountains, with a village nestled at the southern end and a lighthouse at the northern tip, offering a unique blend of nature and culture. Visitors can walk to the lighthouse through a scenic 30-minute path surrounded by fields and forests, where they’ll find a small museum alongside the lighthouse.
Ogijima is also known for its charming village, perched on the slopes of the mountain with narrow lanes connecting traditional wooden houses. The island is home to the Toyotamahime Shrine, a sacred site where people pray for safe childbirth. Ogijima is one of the venues for the Setouchi Triennale, an art festival that brings temporary and permanent art installations to the island. Visitors can explore the diverse artworks, which range from conventional indoor pieces to outdoor installations and art projects built within homes, although many are closed on weekdays and in winter.
