Kankakei Gorge
Kankakei Gorge (寒霞渓) is a stunning ravine in the heart of Shodoshima Island, recognized as one of Japan's three most beautiful gorges. It is especially breathtaking during autumn, when the leaves turn brilliant shades of red and gold, usually in the second half of November. Visitors can admire the scenery from the Kankakei Ropeway, which runs between two stations. The upper station, near Shodoshima's highest peak, offers observation decks with panoramic views of the gorge, the island, and the Seto Inland Sea.
For those who love adventure, two hiking trails connect the ropeway stations. The western trail is about two kilometers long and takes an hour uphill, while the eastern trail is longer at three kilometers. Both trails wind through the forest and provide a peaceful way to experience the gorge's natural beauty. By car, visitors can access parking at both ropeway stations, making it easy to explore the area.
