Shodoshima Great Kannon (Daikannon)

5 of 8 in Shodoshima Island

Shodoshima Great Kannon (小豆島大観音, Shōdoshima Daikannon) is a towering 50-meter statue of Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy, located on the mountainside of Shodoshima Island. Completed in 1993, this stunning white statue not only stands as a symbol of compassion but also houses a temple inside. Visitors can explore the statue by climbing or taking an elevator up to the top floor located within the Kannon’s chest, where they can view the sacred relic—a tooth of the Buddha—donated by a temple in Sri Lanka. The top floor also serves as an observation deck, offering stunning views of the surrounding island and ocean.

The base of the statue is equally impressive, with a maze of halls filled with hundreds of miniature golden replicas of the Great Kannon, donated by visitors. These miniature statues surround a traditional altar in the central hall, where visitors can participate in worship. A visit to the Shodoshima Great Kannon is a unique spiritual experience, blending history, culture, and breathtaking views.
