Takamijima Island Travel Tips
Takamijima Island (高見島), located in the Seto Inland Sea, is part of the Shiwaku Island Chain in western Kagawa Prefecture. The island's name, meaning "high view island," reflects its mountainous terrain. Today, Takamijima has fewer than 30 residents, all living in a small fishing village on the southeastern shore. The island's charm lies in its unique burial customs, terraced homes, and scenic coastal views. It is a quiet retreat with a peaceful, rural atmosphere.
Despite its depopulation, Takamijima has worked to revitalize itself by hosting the Setouchi Triennale art festival. During this event, modern art installations are placed across the island, adding to its allure. The Ura District, with its Edo-period buildings and labyrinthine pathways, offers a glimpse into the island's past. While many homes are abandoned, the island’s picturesque landscapes and serene environment continue to attract visitors seeking art, history, and nature.
