Teshima Island (豊島) is a hidden gem in the Seto Inland Sea, known for its serene landscapes and vibrant contemporary art scene. This rural island, alongside its neighbors Naoshima and Inujima, has become a dynamic destination for art lovers. Teshima plays host to the Setouchi Triennale art festival, held every three years, showcasing an impressive array of installations and performances that celebrate the island's unique culture.

The crown jewel of Teshima is the Teshima Art Museum, a stunning piece of contemporary architecture nestled among terraced rice fields. Designed to engage the senses, this simple concrete structure features a captivating display of water drops that dance on its surface. As you explore Teshima's charming fishing villages, you'll discover a variety of art installations, many accessible year-round, with some smaller works available on weekends and holidays.

Getting around

Two bus lines connect Ieura Port to other villages and ports on Teshima. One bus runs between Ieura and Karato ports via the Teshima Art Museum (every 1-2 hours), and the other goes to Ko Village (every 2-3 hours). The fare is 200 yen per ride (400 yen from April 2025). Extra buses run during the Setouchi Triennale.

You can also rent bicycles at Ieura and Karato ports—about 1000 yen for 4 hours or 1500 yen for a full day. If you enjoy walking, the villages are less than an hour apart on foot.
