Naruto Travel Tips

1 of 2 in Tokushima Prefecture

Naruto (鳴門), nestled at the northeastern tip of Shikoku Island in Tokushima Prefecture, offers a unique natural spectacle: the famous Naruto whirlpools. These powerful, swirling currents can be observed beneath the Onaruto Bridge, which connects Shikoku to Awaji Island, making it a captivating stop for visitors. With viewing platforms and boat tours, you can get up close to this dynamic display of nature's power.

Adding a cultural dimension, Naruto is also the starting point of the Shikoku Pilgrimage, a journey to 88 temples associated with Kobo Daishi, founder of Shingon Buddhism. Begin this spiritual adventure at Ryozenji Temple, the first stop of the pilgrimage, for an enriching experience that combines natural wonder and cultural heritage.

Getting around

In Naruto, the main attractions are spread out and located outside the city center. Naruto Park and the famous whirlpools are about 6 km north of downtown, while Ryozenji Temple and the German-related sites are about 10 km to the west. If you arrive by train, you’ll get off at JR Naruto Station, and from there it’s a 20-minute bus ride to Naruto Park and the whirlpools.

If you arrive by highway bus, the buses do not stop in the city center. Most stop at Naruto Kosoku Bus Stop, from where you can transfer to a local bus at Konarutobashi Bus Stop to reach either Naruto Station or Naruto Park. Some buses from Osaka or Kyoto also stop at Naruto Koen-guchi Bus Stop near Naruto Park, but only in one direction. If you're flying in, Tokushima Airport is 15 minutes south of Naruto Station by bus, and most airport buses continue on to Naruto Park. While public transport is available, it’s not frequent—renting a car from Tokushima City or the airport is often the easiest way to get around.
