Oboke Gorge

1 of 1 in attractions in Iya Valley

Oboke Gorge (大歩危, Ōboke) and its neighbor, Koboke Gorge (小歩危), are dramatic, steep-sided canyons carved by the Yoshino River near the entrance to the Iya Valley. Their names mean "big dangerous steps" and "small dangerous steps," reflecting the jagged, rocky terrain. Known for their striking natural beauty, the gorges are a perfect destination for adventure seekers and nature lovers. Visitors often combine a trip here with the scenic Iya Valley for an unforgettable experience.

One of Japan’s top outdoor adventure spots, Oboke Gorge rivals Minakami in Gunma Prefecture for thrilling activities. Whitewater rafting on the Yoshino River is a major draw, especially during peak season when the rapids are at their most intense. The gorges also offer canyoning and peaceful boat cruises, allowing visitors to take in the breathtaking landscapes from the water.

Getting there

Limited express trains between Okayama and Kochi stop at Oboke Station every hour. You can also reach Oboke from Awa-Ikeda Station by train (30 minutes, 530-980 yen) or by bus (40 minutes, 670 yen, every 2-3 hours).
