Sannai Maruyama Site
Sannai Maruyama Archaeological Site (三内丸山遺跡, Sannai Maruyama Iseki) is one of the most well-preserved Jomon Period villages, dating back to 13000-300 BC. Discovered by accident while surveying land for a baseball field, the site was home to over 700 structures, including long houses, storage areas, roads, and burial pits. Today, you can explore the site’s reconstructions, including large long houses and pit dwellings, offering a fascinating glimpse into ancient village life.
The Sannai Maruyama Archaeological Site also features the Jomon Jiyukan, a museum displaying artifacts from the excavation. Visitors can try on Jomon period clothing, use ancient tools, and even try making toys. The site, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021, is a must-see destination for history enthusiasts. It’s easily combined with a visit to the nearby Aomori Museum of Art, whose design is inspired by the excavation site.
