Aomori
From Tokyo
  • By train
  • Take the Hayabusa train on the Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Shin-Aomori (3.5 hours). Then transfer to a local train to Hirosaki (30-40 minutes). The whole trip takes about 4.5 hours and costs around 18,000 yen. It’s covered by the Japan Rail Pass, JR East Tohoku Area Pass, and JR East South Hokkaido Pass. Seat reservations are required on the Hayabusa train. Trains run about once an hour.

  • Several companies run daytime and overnight highway buses between Tokyo and Aomori, stopping at Hirosaki. The trip takes 9-10 hours and costs between 4,000 and 12,000 yen, depending on the travel date.

From Aomori
  • By train
  • Hirosaki and Aomori are connected by trains on the JR Ou Line, with departures every hour. The trip takes about 45 minutes, costs 680 yen, and is covered by the Japan Rail Pass and other JR passes. Alternatively, there are faster JR limited express trains, costing an extra 520 yen for an unreserved seat or 850-1450 yen for a reserved seat.
