Sendai Travel Tips

1 of 2 in Miyagi Prefecture

Sendai (仙台), the vibrant heart of the Tohoku Region, is Japan's largest city outside of Tokyo, boasting a population of approximately one million. Founded around 1600 by the powerful feudal lord Date Masamune, Sendai is rich in history and culture, with numerous attractions dedicated to Masamune and his legacy. Visitors can explore the city's unique blend of modernity and tradition, highlighted by beautiful parks, shopping districts, and historical sites.

Just under an hour northeast of Sendai lies the enchanting town of Matsushima, famous for its picturesque bay filled with pine-clad islets, recognized as one of Japan's three most scenic views. This close proximity makes Sendai an ideal base for exploring the natural beauty and tranquility of Matsushima, creating an unforgettable experience in this captivating region.

Getting around

The easiest way to get around Sendai is by the Loople Sendai, a tourist bus that connects the city's top attractions. It stops at places like Zuihoden, Sendai City Museum, and Aoba Castle. The bus runs every 20 minutes from 9:00 to 16:00, with a one-hour loop. A single ride costs 260 yen, or you can get a 1-day pass for 630 yen (only valid for Loople buses). A combined pass for Loople and the subway costs 920 yen.

Sendai also has two subway lines, the Namboku Line and the Tozai Line, which meet at Sendai Station. The subway is useful for local travel, but not essential for tourists. JR trains like the Senzan Line take you north to Rinnoji Temple, while the Senseki Line goes to Matsushima, 35 km away. Sendai Airport is 20 km southeast and can be reached by train in about 15-25 minutes. You can use the Icsca, Suica, and other IC cards for easy travel on buses, trains, and the Loople Sendai bus.
