Rinnoji Temple

8 of 12 in Sendai

Rinnoji (輪王寺, Rinnōji), a serene temple located to the north of Sendai’s downtown, is a peaceful retreat featuring a beautiful Japanese garden and pagoda. Founded in 1441 by Date Mochimune, a member of the powerful Date clan, it serves as their family temple. Originally located elsewhere, the temple moved to its present location in Sendai during the early 1600s along with the Date family.

While the temple's main hall is simple, visitors are drawn to the tranquil gardens and pagoda beyond. The well-maintained grounds offer visitors a chance to stroll along peaceful paths, admire the koi in the ponds, and relax on benches while enjoying the picturesque surroundings. Recently restored, Rinnoji preserves its historic charm, making it a serene and beautiful spot for those exploring Sendai.
