Otsu Castle Ruins
Otsu Castle Ruins (大津城跡), once a massive stronghold along Lake Biwa's shore, was built in 1586 by Asano Nagamasa, a loyal subordinate of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Originally known as Sakamoto Castle, it was relocated to Otsu, where it expanded into a large fortress with a surrounding castle town, which is now part of the modern Hamaotsu district. The castle’s strategic location played a key role in the region's history.
After the Battle of Sekigahara, the castle was moved to Zeze, and much of the materials from the castle's keep were used to construct Hikone Castle. Today, visitors can see only a stone monument near Otsu Port as a reminder of this once-imposing fortress. Despite its ruins, Otsu Castle holds historical significance and offers a glimpse into the area's past.
