Matsue Castle
Matsue Castle (松江城, Matsuejō), also known as the "black castle" for its striking dark exterior, is one of Japan's original surviving castles. Built in 1611 and perched on a hill with a protective moat and thick walls, it was designed for battle but never saw conflict. This historic landmark, preserved through major renovations in the 1950s, now houses a museum showcasing period arms and artifacts, offering a glimpse into Japan’s feudal past.
Visitors can also enjoy a peaceful boat cruise along the castle moat and Horikawa River. The boats, departing every 20-30 minutes, glide through scenic canals as boatmen share the history of the area. Audio guides in various languages are available for an immersive experience.
